Tonight we will have our annual Genesis Night Hike and sleepover (euphemism for stay awake all night). The fact that the two events are planned for the same night is no accident, as the hope is that young people will be exhausted after the trek and everyone will get a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, this is one of the those plans that is excellent in theory but absolutely useless in practice as in past years, the only people exhausted and in need of sleep have been the leaders!
This year we are walking from Hillcrest in Brynna, up to and along the Ridgeway path, down through the Smylog forest, along the forest road and back to the church. All of this in the dark with a sizable group of young people and only torches to show the way. It sounds more daunting than it actually is and in past years we’ve only lost a few (joke!).
Once safely back to the church we enjoy hot soup and hot dogs. Later, various activities will go on, Christmas shoe boxes packed, DVDs watched and games played.
In the morning it’s tea, toast and a clear up and being picked up bleary eyed, by parents who at least will have enjoyed a good night’s sleep.
This is a great event (one of my favourites) and many, particularly the younger ones are really excited at the prospect. Please pray that the group will have a good time and be safe.
We are keeping an eye on the weather in the hope that it will improve. Looking at the BBC, in may not be too bad, if there’s no improvement however we will have no option but to postpone the walk.
