Genesis resumed last night after the half term break. A number of our regular members were absent since this is the exam season but numbers were still very good.
For the first part of the evening teams competed in a quiz. There were rounds where male and female celebrities had to be identified, a round on advert slogans and a round on TV programmes. There was a great deal of shouting and disputing over the scores, the marking and just about everything else.
For the second part of the evening we did something a little different in that instead of our usual thing of someone giving a talk and then splitting up into small groups, we had two interviews. I was able to ask two people, Hannah L and Sam, questions about their lives and how they became Christians. It was a real blessing to hear these testimonies, particularly as for both concerned, this year has hardly been easy, yet they were able to share how they had found strength from God. Both were really honest and clear and we concluded with a short summary of the Gospel.
It is very difficult to put into words the contrast between the two parts of the evening. For the games and social segment, there was loads of noise, people going back and fore to the toilet, hiding one another’s shoes etc and texting on their mobile phones. I’m not suggesting that anyone was badly behaved; it’s exactly the behaviour that would be expected from young people. The truly remarkable thing is the behaviour during the interviews when everyone listened intently to what was being said. There was no time when someone was asked to stop talking or to put their phone away. I realise that these moments are precious and that very often at times like this God is speaking.
Please pray for those who are considering the Christian faith, for those who will be making important decisions regarding their careers and for those taking exams spending their time on facebook revising.
