There are some events that I wish we could just put in a box and then pull them out all of the time and last night’s meeting was one such event. As posted earlier, it was another in our series looking at tough questions, last night’s subject was ‘Where is God with Serious Illness? It was a fantastic evening and one that will be remembered for a long time.
There was a really good attendance from Eb and other churches as well as a number of people who would not normally attend a church. Keith an expert in his field but is also a very gifted speaker and was able to explain very complex concepts in a way that an ordinary person could understand.
Keith began by looking at the very beginning of life, a single cell and how that cell grows into a fully developed baby through cell division. He had some startling facts;
- If the DNA in a single cell could be placed in a straight line, it would measure 1 metre
- It is estimated that there are between 60-100 trillion cells in an adult human being
- If all of the DNA in a person could be lined up it would reach from the Earth to the Sun and back 300 times
Keith explained how medical science is finding that more and more serious illnesses are rooted in the cells and considering how many cells there are and how much genetic material, perhaps we should not ask why do some get sick? But why aren’t more of us sick? The warning in Genesis to our first ancestors “when you eat of it you will surely die” is entirely true, like a cut flower we are cut off from our life source by the law of sin and death.
Keith went on to show how in the cross God has dealt with sin and we look forward to a day when our salvation will be complete
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:1-4)
Keith has kindly given consent for us to post the talk, both the PowerPoint and the sound file on the church website and I’ll post the link as soon as that’s done.
