Day 2 of our Read with Us scheme. To read the passage online here it is on Bible Gateway.
In most bibles there are just a few blank pages between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New. The truth is there is a gap of several hundred years. There were no new prophets, Israel was occupied by a brutal and powerful enemy and God it seemed was silent.
Zechariah and Elizabeth were upright people who loved God and were seeking to serve him. They also had their own anguish in that they had no children. Today it’s possible to choose not to have children but first century Jewish society was very different, children were everything. To make matters worse, they were well on in years, that ship had sailed.
For Zechariah, being chosen to offer incense was a once in a lifetime opportunity. It must have been very exciting for his whole family.
In times of silence and disappointment do we hold fast to God’s promises, are we faithful in love and service? We give thanks that God is faithful and unchanging and will always achieve his purposes.
We ask the Lord to help us to trust when we are dealing with difficult circumstances.
