Day 3! Well done for sticking with it. Read today’s passage here.
Zechariah would certainly have taken his service in the temple seriously. We have no idea of what he was expecting but he was ‘startled and gripped with fear’ by what happened. After more than four hundred years of silence, God broke in. Zechariah and Elizabeth’s lives would never be the same again.
The news from the angel (we find out a few verses later his name is Gabriel) was more wonderful than could have been imagined. Elizabeth and Zechariah would have a son even though they were unable to have children and were well past their sell by date. And what a son, a joy and delight to his parents, he will make a positive impact on the nation, be the forerunner of the Messiah and great in the sight of the Lord! To underline the fact that God was at work doing something incredible, the angel even provided a name for the child before he was conceived and it was a name with a clue to what God was about to do; John, meaning the Lord is gracious.
Over four hundred years of silence must have been very challenging for faithful believers but God was about to make his greatest statement when he spoke to us by his Son. God had something planed that was far beyond anyones imagination, the challenge was to trust him without knowing all of the answers. Gabriel’s words to Zechariah were wonderful but as Christians, God has made promises to us, great and precious promises.
We thank you Lord that your ways are not our ways and your plans not our plans. Help us Lord to trust you and may your promises hold us firm in you.
