In the second part of his song, Zechariah turned his attention to the ministry of John. The child is only a few days old but Zechariah has had months to meditate on the words of the angel. John would be ‘a prophet of the Most High’; we have already read that Jesus would be called the ‘Son of the Most High’. Luke has been revealing two narratives with much in common, but one is a prophet whilst the other is the Son. After over four hundred years there would be a new prophet.
The phrase; ‘you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him’, takes up the words of Gabriel (1:17) as well as Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3. The Isaiah reference would be quoted by John himself thirty years later (Matthew 3:3). John’s mission was to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus.
God was doing something extraordinary, it would involve salvation and the forgiveness of sins. Beautiful imagery is used, like the rising sun driving away the darkness so the Light of the World was about to enter the human race and lead it into the path of peace. Peace with God for those who had been his enemies
Thank you Lord that you used ordinary people like Zechariah, Elizabeth and John (even he, great as he was, had doubts; 7:20) to do your work. Thank you Father that the rising sun has come to us from heaven. Thank you for salvation and that your sins can be forgiven.
Lord help us to walk in your paths of peace.
