Hannah has provided the notes this week.
We’re at the end of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee now and he’s sending the disciples out and about to follow in his footsteps. The Bible passage can be read here.
The disciples have been witnessing the miracles of Jesus left, right, and centre for the last few chapters. He now asks them to try it themselves. The thing here is that they don’t know a lot. These people (as we‘ve covered) are random, they’re fishermen and tax collectors. They don’t know everything there is to know. They don’t know the Old Testament back to front, they don’t know all of the Pharisees’ rules (they pick corn on the Sabbath). That obviously isn’t what Jesus is looking for.
Some of you will know that I work in Human Resources, an important part of that is recruitment. When a good business is recruiting, they’ll lay out all of their “selection criteria”. They’ll have some things that are absolutely necessary and some things they’d like if possible. Jesus is sending the disciples out on a really important mission here and his selection criteria is a very short list, in fact it seems he’s only looking for two things. He’s looking for faith, that they will trust in God’s provision of miracles and necessities (place to stay etc) and he’s also looking for humility. He tells them not to take anything with them, no money, food or spare clothes. All they have is the message and the power Jesus has given them.
I think for us, or at least for me personally, we put off doing things for God because we don’t know enough or we don’t have the tools we need. This passage is about relying completely on him, we don’t need to know everything or have everything sussed in order to serve him. We can learn as we go. The disciples were able to work amazing miracles all over the place because of their trust and God’s power. Our potential is not limited by our abilities but God’s – and he is limitless.
The disciples saw Jesus at work and followed his example. We’ve seen Jesus at work in our own lives and in our church, it’s time for us to shape up and follow him.
Thank you God that you’ve given us a basis to trust you, that you’ve sought us and loved us in such an amazing way. Help us to serve you with courageous hearts as you deserve, relying on you and nothing else.
