Andy has kindly produced this week’s notes. The passage can be read here.
When we follow God’s instructions, amazing things happen to us. This was certainly the experience of Philip. He met an important Ethiopian official, explained the scriptures that he was already reading, saw him come to faith and then baptised him. What an amazing event in Philip’s life and the Ethiopian’s too!
The instructions that Philip received were very clear, God’s angel spoke directly to him telling him where to go, God’s Spirit told Philip who to speak to. Philip obeyed and had the opportunity of telling him the good news about Jesus. The Ethiopian was already searching the scriptures; he was on his way back from worshipping at Jerusalem. Philips question gave him the opening to explain what the Ethiopian was reading.
The Ethiopian was reading Isaiah’s prophecy about Jesus. Jesus during his unjust trial remained silent. He gave his life for us dying in our place. Jesus was punished for our sin. By his wounds we are healed. The Ethiopian understood what Jesus had done for him, became a Christian and was baptised immediately. The Ethiopian went on his way rejoicing!
Philip was taken away by God’s Spirit to do God’s work preaching and travelling to Caesarea.
Do I follow God’s instructions? As we read the bible, his instructions are clear.
Are we open to the prompting of God’s Holy Spirit so that we may tell others what Jesus has done for them? Will we take our God given opportunities that he gives us today?
Are you a Christian? Have you been baptised? Has someone explained to you what you must do to become a Christian and you are hesitating? Today is the day to trust Jesus, to put him first in your life!
Am I personally grateful that Jesus died for my sin? Let’s take time out now just too simply thank him and praise him. By his wounds we are healed. Confessed sin is forgiven. Turn to God, ask for forgiveness put him first and today will be a day of rejoicing!
