The notes today are on Acts 16:16-24 and have been written by Paul Lloyd.
“She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.’” (16:17)
It is said there is no such thing as bad publicity. So why did Paul become angry when the slave girl was telling the listening crowd about the true God and salvation, and how does it speak a message for us today?
Paul knew the slave girl was not only a slave to her earthly masters, but was also demon enslaved. Paul also knew that the listening crowd would not only hear the words about God but in the next seconds, Satan’s demons would be telling the same listeners all sorts of lies and half-truths. Paul like us, knew that as followers of Jesus we will be identified by our friends, acquaintances and just as importantly our enemies. Therefore the last thing we need is a demonic letter of reference or approval. Paul sent the demon packing, not in his name, but in the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I did my teacher training with a lady who went to a Christian Spiritualist church. I had many conversations on the subject of speaking to the dead. It is against everything Christian and it is biblically wrong. I’ve also spoken to close Christian friends about spiritualism and how there is only one Holy Spirit and everything else is demonic and of the devil’s work and trickery.
Paul could not set the slave girl free from her slave masters, but he was able to set her free from demon possession by the power of Jesus.
The sickening part of this story was that her slave masters didn’t care about the girl, they only cared about the revenue they would now lose.
The Diary is a local free paper distributed in and around Talbot Green and just this month carried a local review of how the community hall less than a 1/4 mile from Ebenezer was well attended for a spiritualist meeting with plans for a further one in November. We should be praying and working to set free any we know from such demonic searching by the power of Jesus Christ as Paul did.
There are all sorts of people traffickers making money from desperate people looking for help. Let us pray diligently for these desperate people and the traffickers, who need Jesus in their lives as well, and for an end to this demonic trade. Pray for the lost and desperate people around the world, help them to find Jesus through the power of prayer.
