Our passage today is Colossians 3:18-4:1 and the notes have been provided by Graham and Julie Rowe.
It is worthwhile remembering that the chapter & verse divisions have been added to ease the way we read the Bible they are not inspired. So it is important to read the letter in its entirety so it retains the original context. Yesterday we saw how there is no division on race we are told to bear, forgive & put on love as members of ONE body. Now Paul turns to personal family relationships. The key to me seems to be the focus that Christ is central to all relationships. “Fitting in the lord” “pleases the Lord” “reverence for the Lord” “working for the Lord” “It is The Lord Christ you are serving” “There is NO favouritism”.
If the way we build our relationships is centred on Christ, who died for us, how can we then twist His Word to support our bad behaviours & attitudes to one another? Ephesians 5 v 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Christ’s “Agape” love is the sacrificial love that puts others first at your own expense – the Grace of God. A loving family relationship based with Christ at the centre will learn to bear, forgive & love one another & when we pray together it may help us to stay together. If we want to serve & please Christ then we need to put into practice the fact that we are all equal members of one body.
Lord Jesus help me to keep you central to all my family relationships personally & in the wider family known as your church; learning to bear, forgive & love them. Amen.
