Its Colossians 4:15-18 today and it marks the end of our look at Paul’s letter to the Colossians. Graham and Julie have supplied the notes this week.
Paul may have been in chains but he was still able to get his messages out to the churches by letters. I am a great fan of the public reading of Scripture, it should be seen as one of the major highlights in any church service. Here we see Paul encouraging the public reading of his letters to the church & ensuring the letters sent to the different churches in the area were shared. However, in Revelation 3 we see that the Laodicean church had a scathing commentary as they had become lukewarm neither hot nor cold. It is sad to see that in a relatively short period of time despite bright encouraging letters & prayerful support they had taken their focus away from the one true Gospel which must serve as a wake call for us all. It is interesting to note Archippus is mentioned by name to complete the ministry received in the Lord. Assuming Archippus would have been in the house church when this letter was read would have been an encouragement to him & the Colossians, it was as if the Colossians were also being encouraged to support him as he worked out his ministry in serving them.
We need to focus on the infallible word of God as we read it or hear it publicly read. Relying on the Holy Spirit within us to take the words & apply them to our hearts, mind & attitudes resulting in service. The local church may be a challenging place to be in, but it provides a vehicle for us to complete & practice the ministry we have been given to build up the fellowship we are part of.
David Guzic (Enduring Word Media) makes the following observations:
- God gives ministry to His people.
- True ministry is received in the Lord.
- Ministry may be left unfulfilled.
- One must take heed to their ministry in order for it to be fulfilled.
- We should encourage others to fulfill their ministry.
The most chilling thought is that a ministry may be left unfulfilled. Jesus is liberal with His grace gifts so that the body can be built up, if we are not sharing what Jesus has given us to share within the church then something will be incomplete & lacking in what Jesus is building as His beautiful bride. 1 Cor 12 v7 “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”
Lord you are so loving, generous & kind as you call us & equip us to serve in your church. Thank you that you choose to give good gifts to your people that we may play some part in sharing & equipping the local church to reach out with the good news of Jesus. Lord help us to fulfill the ministry & gifting you have given us. Amen.
