Big thank you to Graham and Julie for this week’s notes. I’m sure all of us have been blessed as we have grappled with some difficult passages. Its Psalm 2 today.
Acts 4:25–26 attributes this Psalm to be written by David. It seems amazing that nations conspire & plot against God the great creator. It seems crazy when the people who are followers of Jesus seeking to put their faith into action by serving the poor & needy. Praying for those in authority, seeking to pray in God’s kingdom rule “on earth as it is in heaven” should be conspired & plotted against. But we shouldn’t be surprised as Jesus promised we would be persecuted if we are actively following Him. The spirit of the age is to deny the deity of Jesus. We, in the west, are living in a period of hostile, aggressive atheism where followers of Jesus are marginalised & prosecuted for daring to share their faith & beliefs. Law makers seem determined to kick against the rule & reign of God in our society by passing laws in direct opposition to Gods best plan for humans to live a worthy life on earth. The attack is not only against God but his anointed which speaks of Jesus. The perverse claim is that God & his anointed bind people with chains & shackles which is the total opposite of Jesus mission which is to break the chains of bondage to sin which so easily entangles us John 8 v 36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Although we face opposition in our daily walk with Jesus today; the Almighty God, seated on His throne in heaven, laughs & scoffs at the efforts of human kings to oppose Him. God is working His plan out & it will come to fruition at the proper time (His time not ours). The true King (Jesus) is installed on Zion’s hill & from v7 it is King Jesus that picks up the text proclaiming the LORD’S decree. Jesus will be coming as the righteous judge, with the power & authority to claim His inheritance. The kings & rulers on earth have been warned to serve the Lord with fear & trembling. Philippians 2 v12 picks up this theme:
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling”.
Our God is a Holy & righteous God who calls us into a relationship through Jesus. Kiss the Son, make peace with Him whilst the time of grace is with us & be blessed as we take refuge in Him.
This is a challenging Psalm, but shows that God is in control despite the worse that man can plot & rage against Him. The good news is that God himself has set His Son as King of Kings, on His throne. He will come to break resistance with a rod of iron & smash them to pieces like pottery. God has made His move in sending His Son Jesus to die in our place on the cross & raised Him to life. Death could not hold him. The call is for wisdom & to respond to the warnings, so kiss the Son lest he be angry. He died in our place to set us free & invite us into a loving living relationship. Will we plot & conspire against the Lord Jesus or accept His invitation to play our part in God’s great plan for His Church? Take refuge in Him & receive His blessings.
Lord we thank you that you died in our place to make a way back to God for us through your blood shed on the cross. Thank you that you have come to bring blessings to those that have confessed their sins & sought your free gift of forgiveness & eternal life that you give us. Lord save our leaders from rebellion & turn them to your Son lest He be angry. Amen
