Jacob doesn’t really know God at this point in his life. We can see that from his words in yesterday’s reading; ‘If God will….then the Lord will be my God’. In spite of this, God was still leading Jacob, guiding him to be where he needed to be. It reminds me of many testimonies that I’ve heard. People often say something like; ‘I had no thought of God before I became a Christian and then later when I looked back, I could see God had been guiding me all along.’
With God’s guidance, Jacob arrived at the right place. This was quite an achievement for the man who loved to stay among the tents. Remember there were no road signs so he had to ask the shepherds where he was. As God had promised to be with him and bless him wherever he went it wasn’t really a surprise to find he was exactly where he was meant to be, although it probably surprised Jacob.
The second surprise was that he met the person he was meant to meet. Remember, his purpose was to find a wife from among his own people (28:2), so to meet Rachel, who was from the right family and; ‘lovely in form, and beautiful’ (29:17) was pretty amazing.
Finally Jacob did something extraordinary. So far Jacob’s journey had been similar to the journey of Abraham’s servant when he came to find a wife for Isaac. But whereas, the servant almost narrates the journey and is praying and worshiping when God answers prayer; Jacob says very little. We get the idea that this is a big well, there are many flocks and many shepherds were needed to move the stone. Jacob moved the stone without any help. Was he trying to impress the beautiful Rachel? Perhaps it was strength given by the Lord. Whatever is happening, Jacob was in the right place talking to the right person and doing the right thing; it must have been a new experience for him. No wonder he wept aloud and kissed her.
God is still guiding people today, even those who do not know him yet. He often brings things about so that a person can hear something that he wants them to know. If you aren’t a Christian or not sure whether you are, perhaps God has lead you here right now. Give your life to Christ today.
If you have some questions in the corners of your mind,
Traces of discouragement, and peace you cannot find,
Reflections of your past, seem to face you everyday,
But there’s one thing I want you to know, that Jesus is the way.
Jesus is the answer, for the world today,
Above Him there’s no other,
Jesus is the way. (Andre Crouch)
