In yesterday’s verse 30 “Even as He spoke many believed in Him.” Jesus then talks to the Jews who had believed in Him and to those who didn’t. There is more for believers, it is not enough to consent to belief; we need to hold to Jesus teaching if we want to be true disciples. This will lead us to the truth and the truth will set us free! The unbelievers seek to defend their tradition, bound by their own human rules and regulations but the Words of Jesus have come to set us free and liberate us from the rules and regulations that no one could keep: Romans 3 v23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Jesus confirms their ancestry as descendants of Abraham, but does not affirm their assumption to be “spiritual” descendants so that they could call Abraham their father. Jesus recognises that they have become slaves to Sin, with no permanent place in the family; ancestry to Abraham wasn’t enough, because it led them to slavery to sin due to their rules and regulations. But becoming a true son you belong to the family forever. “So if the Son sets you free you are free indeed”. Jesus challenges them into a corner, they now move on from claiming Abraham as their father to claiming the only Father they have is God Himself!! Jesus knows the Father intimately and only ever does His Fathers bidding, so Jesus can again point out their sin in trying to kill Him which proves they do not have God as their father! Their true father is the devil, such strong words from Jesus. Jesus challenges them v46 can any of you prove me guilty of sin to which we have no response, words that could only be spoken by the true Son of God totally confident in His sinless life before the great judgement of God the father.
I can’t help but wonder how long the unbelievers can keep on trying to defend the indefensible. Jesus has told them and us the truth, the truth sets us free, what is there not to desire about that? Coming up soon is John 10 v10 …I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. How many challenges and obstacles do I put in the way of hearing and obeying God’s words to me? Do I hold (abide, live) to Jesus teaching, do others know I am a follower of Jesus? Have I let the words of Jesus set me free? If I am free do I show it to others?
Lord Jesus I want to abide in your word and practice what you call me to do. Increase my sensitivity to hear your words and help me to trust and have faith in you so that I know the true freedom only the words of Jesus bring and help me to live it out in my day to day living. Amen.
